How I went for a 5-stage job interview and still didn't get the job
It was around April in the year 2018, I was already seeing myself getting an opportunity to work for a notable Marketing and Advertising Agency in Lagos, Nigeria. I was convinced and believed I was well positioned and prepared for the job interview in Lagos which I left Abeokuta in Ogun State to attend.
During that time I hardly had enough money on me as I just left a toxic job. This toxic job it's something I would love to talk about but this is a story for another day.
The first stage of the job interview involved meeting with the employee who wanted to leave the position that I wanted to fill. I passed and was moved to the second stage where I had to convince the department managers for the position after which they got back to me to come for a brief presentation and online brand auditing of one of their clients - this happened for the third stage.
I tell you that even after that I was invited for a 4th and 5th stage interview, the previous was to check my ability to use work tools and the latter was to meet the "Oga Pata Pata", the CEO of the private agency for the company culture fit and values alignment test.
I can still remember me putting my effort and hay game to play to convince the 'Oga', I even made him smile 😀, it was at this point I was getting this feeling that "I got you people, you can't make me go through all the stages of job interviews and you won't offer me the job".
Ladies and Gentlemen unfortunately in the end I did not get the job, it even took the company 4 months before they could get back to me that they could not offer me the job. I was heartbroken and bittered as I remembered the stress and the little money I had on me then that I was managing. But in this case, life moved on and so did I.
The main reason I put out this story was to share that life is uncertain, if we set out to achieve an aim with a high level of certainty and it fails, we shouldn't be disappointed because we have no power to control any future outcome.
You might have put all your effort and hay game into attaining a goal even holding the conviction that nothing is stopping you from winning and you still lose, don't be worried, there is another room to try again, even the career influencer and wealthy people you know of can testify to this. That's why persistence is the key, knowing that you don't win an opportunity doesn't mean you won't win another as long as you keep on looking out and applying for opportunity.
Will I say since then I haven't gotten another opportunity...No, even the failed ones were even greater than the ones I won.
So don't stop trying, the right time for every opportunity will surely manifest.
Just remember to work more on yourself; and improve every day, don't say because an opportunity hasn't come yet means you won't keep learning and improving your skills. Also, be persistent in taking those actions of yours, and remember the top isn't crowded yet.
